Here’s a really useful tip: Don’t wrap gifts that you’re taking on the plane or putting in your luggage; it’ll probably get unwrapped or flag you for additional screening. Personally, I get the empty little bottles at Walmart and use them whenever I travel for shampoo, body wash, etc. Some things you simply can’t take in your carryon; they have to go in your checked bag.

You can also factor the cost of a checked bag into your calculations; it might be cheaper to skip the bag and buy stuff at your destination.
