Have you ever Googled yourself? Maybe you should, because other people will. Employers, colleges, dates. All of them will be looking you up. And since so much of our personal and professional history ends up recorded somewhere online, and anyone who looks hard enough for it is going to find it. Will they like what they see?

There’s actually a whole industry of “reputation management” companies that have sprung up to try and drown out anything bad that crops up online. People with unsavory pasts can try to use search engine optimization and web-spamming tactics to make more positive websites, reviews and blog posts mentioning them show up in the top search rankings. Since most of us can’t afford that type of treatment, it’s best to be careful what you put online and follow the golden rule to make sure nobody talks dirt about you on their blog.
