The breeding of a European honeybee with a honeybee from South Africa has had a deadly affect. An average of 53 deaths per year to be exact. The hybrid bee, or Africanized honeybee as it is known, was accidentally released in Brazil in 1957 and has since spread to the US at a rate of 100-300 miles per year.
Due to their aggressive nature these bees have been dubbed “killer” bees. The nickname has been debated by many with some hoping for some active bee removal. But regardless of research proving that Africanized honeybees have no more potent venom than the European honeybee, the nickname has stuck.
