Well, I guess that bailout left GM on top for now. But I also hear that Chinese automakers are hot on our heels, and they certainly have domestic demand that would quickly make any state-sponsored automaker the biggest one on the planet. They’ve done it with other industries, so it’s not a stretch to think they’d erect trade barriers to favor their own companies. They’re doing it with solar panel companies, right now.
I’m really surprised to learn from this infographic that VW is the second largest car maker. Sure, I see Passats all over the place here, but they’re probably huge in the rest of the world. I wonder if there’s some as yet unknown Chinese company that will be the huge car monolith in like 10 years.
